MIY INSTRUCTIONS: Growing up in a large family the joy of making things came to me at an early age. The making of the holiday greeting cards, Christmas tree ornaments, decorations and teacher’s gifts was something we use to do as a family. Everyone got involved, it was nostalgic. Today along with my sisters and brother, we still enjoy making things for the pure joy of making things. I have two boys and yes I make things with them too, I get them involved even if sometimes they don’t really want to, but once they get into it they enjoy it. It’s the sharing and doing together, and that’s what the holiday season is all about, creating memories to cherish. Yes the joys of making things and having fun making them, is a value that I also wanted to pass on to my boys, its not as thrilling as an electronic gadgets (for the boys) but these memories will last them a lifetime.

The holiday brake is an ideal time to do creative activities with your children. It’s also a great time to go over the pictures that you have gartered over the last year. The wonderful thing about Scrapbooking is that it’s an activity that anyone of any age can participate in.
I remember doing scrapbooking as a young girl, but we used real scraps pieces of paper, and assorted mementos and that’s why it was called scrapbooking. Today scrapbooking has taken on a whole different twist with a lot of bells and whistles; it really doesn’t have to cost a lot to make beautiful memory pages. Start by going trough remnants that you have around your home such as assorted papers, ribbons, notions, wool and assorted tiny treasures that are just waiting to be rediscover and recycle into unique keepsake pages. I purchased only a few new items such as stickers and letters to make it more fun for my son to get involve. I believe in combining the some of the new tools from the new scrapbooking generation as well as utilizing real remnants from the old fashion way of scrapbooking. It only requires a few simple materials, basic tools and skill to create beautiful scrapbooking pages.

Scrapbooking is fun to do with children because
it allows them to explore a combination of many different types of craft forms, such as stamping, embossing, writing with fun types of specialty pens, colouring, decoupage, composition and gluing. It’s also a calming activity, which is ideal to calm them down during this busy season and a great way for them to learn new skills.

Scrapbooking is a creative way to express and showcase treasured photos and mementos to share with family and friends. Scrapbooking pages can be artistically and easily decorated using a variety of colourful acid-free paper products, assorted ornaments, and a variety of different types of artwork. Personalized text, captions, poems, phrases, wishes and special messages can also be added. Pages can even have a theme by giving them a specific style and look. Children like to do theme pages, such as school, sports, friends, vacations, graduations, special events and their pets.

To start, simply have the children choose their favourite photos from the selection that you have gathered over the last year, or from recent vacations or special occasions or events. Three to four pictures per page is plenty. Print your photos out on quality acid-free photo paper in the size needed, on matt or gloss finish quality photo paper. You can even print pictures on canvas and vellum papers that are especially designer for this purpose.

Once your have chosen the images, you need thick and sturdy acid-free blank pages to use as your base. Some papers have different textures, some are transparent such as vellum, some have embossed designs, glitter and others are a play on colors and textures.

Cutting tools: The cutting tools that are now available really take cutting to a whole new level of simplicity. The right tools can help make cutting much simpler especially for kids. To cut papers, photos and text inserts into different types of shapes you can use a template which is a see-through plastic sheet with various designs. Simply trace the outline with a pencil onto a piece of paper or over a picture and then cut it out with scissors. Decorative edged scissors are very cool, especially the ones with interchangeable blades. They are made of a special type of strong plastic, yet they are very safe for children to use, they don’t cut hair or fabric, simply paper.

Assembling and putting it all together is where the real fun begins. Place and position all the items on the page in a balanced composition. Once you are pleased with the layout you are ready to glue and fasten everything into place. For a dynamic presentation and layout, the pictures can be placed in interesting positions, such as on an angle, in a circle or on a slant.

The scrapbooking pages can then be embellish with stickers, decorative punches, picture corners, ribbons, eyelets, brads, rivets, clips, staples, assorted charming ornaments, assorted papers cut with decorative edged scissors or simply hand-ripped. The choices are endless. The finished pages can range from simple to stylish details. It all depends on the materials you choose to incorporate to enhance your personalized pages. Putting on the stickers and letters is what young children who are just learning how to read and write really enjoy doing.

Adhesives: For gluing there are different types for different purpose and surfaces. The basic glues types are glue sticks, white glue, and rubber glue. Metal glue is used to bond metal decorative items to assorted paper surfaces. Foam double-faced adhesives provide a 3-dimentional effect. Glue dots and adhesive sheets are easy to use and require no drying time. Double-faced tape is my very favourite type of adhesive, because it’s quick and can be used on a multitude of surface types. I don’t recommend using spray adhesives with children.

Easy lettering can also be achieved with rub-on lettering or letter stickers which are quite fun to incorporate into a page. They come in a variety of font styles and colour choices. To add fun details to enhance a page in no time at all, just add assorted stickers, simply peel and stick!

Miy Kids scrapbooking; MIY Tips to keep in mind when scrapbooking with kids; First keep it simple. Too many different products and options will only confuse them. Work on one page at a time. Let them create their pages their own way after you have given them only a few basic guidelines. If you go back to redue their pages this will only discourage them and they won’t want to do it anymore. Encourage them as their page progresses and leave it the way it is. It doesn’t have to be perfect after all it’s their pages and the more so to treasure them exactly as they made them.

Start new traditions or continue old ones and discover the joys of making memories by scrapbooking with your kids.

MIY Variations:
•As far as scrapbooking is concern I don’t have any rules, anything goes, there are hundreds of clever products that can be incorporate into creating beautiful pages, such as paints, stencils, sea sponges for special effects, specialty brushes. Foils, mesh, fabric rolls that peel and stick, clay products to make your own embellishment, inks, paper casting etc. In the children craft section you will find origami papers, beads, watercolour pencils, the list goes on. Making mini scrapbooks is a great birthday party, snow day, or rainy day activity to do with the kids…..it’s an all year round activity.
